Miss Canadiana

Miss Canadiana stems from my personal exploration of belonging and home. I work in a perforative way with an iconic persona I recently developed, who satirizes the constructed idea of Canadianess. This character is the winner of the fictitious Miss Canadiana beauty contest.

Performed across the country as a series of live site-specific interventions and translated/transformed into online media and media events, Miss Canadiana will be hosted and promoted by media arts organizations in various locations across Canada.

I will develop an online journal of my experiences as I travel through the country, a web discussion forum, a website on which QuickTime clips of the events will be posted, and I will seek opportunities to exhibit the work in public media events such as teletaxi which will be presented on lcd screens in taxi cabs in Toronto that use gps technology to map the content to location.

Miss Canadiana was in Frankfurt last August. At the Free Manifesta festival, she gave out Canadian souvenirs and posed for photos with tourists

Miss Canadiana's summer plans

  • Miss Canadiana plans to do site-specific interventions in at least 5 locations across Canada.
  • Media Arts Centres and Galleries across the country such as: Eyelevel, SOIL, Western Front and Emmedia will be contacted to promote, co-present the work and to act as a point of contact and technical support for each performan
  • Quicktimes of the events will be uploaded to the website
  • Project will be presented in innovative public media events such as teletaxi, a Year Zero One exhibition which will be the first media arts event onboard taxis equipped with wireless gps and lcd screens.
  • A web forum will be hosted on the site where participants can discuss various proposed topics, issues and events with each other and Miss Canadiana herself
  • Miss Canadiana will write an online journal and will upload digital pictures of herself in the Canadian landscape as she travels and performs across Canada
